Some paintings are easy to walk past. Mine aren't meant to be.

I'm Glenn Verkerk, a self-taught Dutch painter working in acrylics and oils from my studio in Haarlem. I paint large-scale, hyper-realistic scenes — nature, animals, quiet moments — but there's always something that doesn't quite belong.

A yellow inflatable duck drifting among real flamingos. A plastic ring floating above a whale and her calf in the deep. Beauty with a shadow in it. Something that makes you stop, look closer, and feel slightly unsettled — then smile.

That tension is what drives my work. I'm drawn to the duality between the natural and the artificial, the real and the fake, the serious and the absurd. In a world where those lines are blurring faster than ever, I find painting is one of the few places where you can hold them both in the same frame and really look at what that means.

I don't paint decorations. I paint conversations.

Each canvas takes hundreds of hours. I work slowly and deliberately — building up layers, chasing the exact light, earning every feather and every ripple. The scale matters. The detail matters. Because when you stand in front of one of my paintings, I want you to feel like you could step into it — and then catch yourself wondering whether you should.

My work has been shown at Art Laren and is available as original paintings and limited edition prints.

If something stops you — that's the point.
